Submitted by Kashi Vishwanath (@kashi1982) on Oct 1, 2014

Section: Workshops Technical level: Intermediate Status: Confirmed & Scheduled

The objective of the session :-

  1. Introduce wearables
  2. Show various use cases with respect to wearables.
  3. Show pioneering work done by Mindtree on wearables such as “google glass” and “android wear watches”
  4. Provide hands on approach on creating app on Google Glass & Android Wear smartwatches.

My presentation talks of the following:-

  • What is wearble technology?
  • Wearable economy.
  • What are the different wearables available at this point of time?
  • How are wearables getting introduced to the mainstream?
  • How wearables are used today?
  • Power of wearables over other digital channels.
  • Opportunity is various areas for introducing wearable technology.
  • Possible use cases for wearables.

Apart from the above topics, I would like to show demos on the work
that Mindtree has done on Google glass and Android wear watches.

If time permits, I would like to present how I can develop applications
for Google Glass.

Speaker bio

I am Kashi Vishwanath, Technical Architect at Mindtree working in the Mobility domain for the past 11 years.
I have been working on Android for the past 5 years and offlate started to work on wearables such as smartwatches and Google Glass.
I love bringing technology to day to day life as I believe that technology empowers a human to lead a quality life.
Amongst a few apps developed, I would like to highlight that I have developed a Smartwatch app which helps women to communicate about their situations to their dear ones, just by a voice command.
I firmly believe that imparting knowledge helps a person to gain more. I have a passion for teaching and training people and have received great response in this regard. The uniqueness about my teaching/training is that I connect all the missing dots which enables a better learning.

Last, but not the least I enjoy working on and exploring new technologies and open for challenges.

Just a thought: I wonder if it would be more interesting to the audience to give more weight to the deep-dive items like How To Develop Apps For Glass instead of some high-level items like Wearables Available Today (the tech media covers the latter in detail anyway).

This is more a question than a suggestion.

  • Kashi Vishwanath (@kashi1982) Proposer 5 years ago

Sure, I can give a hands on approach on how to develop for Google Glass. Not only glass, but also for Android Wear smartwatches.

  • Shree Kumar (@shreekumar) 5 years ago

I can’t help wondering : Would it not be much to cover both the glass & watch in the same talk ?

Application development for the Glass needs to be covered, IMO. It would be a huge plus if you could highlight the differences in the interaction compared to, say, typical mobile use.

  • Kashi Vishwanath (@kashi1982) Proposer 5 years ago

@shreekumar.. if I have 2 hours for the workshop, i can cover both. However if I have limited time, I will cover only glass development.

    Proposal Review Summary

    Problem Statement

Wearables are in their first generation. Most of the time, the big question that arises is that “Are wearables really useful?”. “What use cases can one
build on wearables?” Through this workshop, I will make an attempt to answer the same.

    Flow of Talk

Talk about the attached slides. (15 mins)
Demo use cases with Google Glass & Android Wear done by Mindtree. (15 mins)
Introduction to Android wear. (5 mins)
Hands on approach on how to build applications for Android Wear (Smartwatches). (45 mins)
If time permits talk about how we can develop applications on Google Glass.(10 mins)

    Target Audience

People looking forward to create applications on Smartwatches and Google Glass.
People who understand developing Android applications and want to build apps on wearables.

    Take away

Get to know various use cases for wearables
Hands on knowledge on building apps on Android Wear smartwatches and google glass.
