Behind the Scenes : Creating Android Devices

This talk aims to give the participants a behind-the-scenes look at what happens during the process of creating a new Android device - starting from a reference design, and ending in a complete working device prototype. The speaker will present primarily a software perspective. At the end of this talk, a listener would be able to get a feel of what it takes to create a new device, including challenges along the way and maybe a list of things to take care about.
Creating a new Android device tends to be a high energy, tight deadline activity. A typical effort starts from a working reference design of some sort, with some hardware changes. Basic Android bringup tends to be straightforward. However, getting all features to work needs significant amount of effort, potentially starting from the kernel level extending all the way to modifications to the Android framework. This is a general interest kind of talk that aims to give the technical details, as well as give the audience a feel of the process.
Some knowledge of android architecture, or background in handheld devices/embedded systems is desirable, but not necessary.
Shree Kumar has been involved in the creation process of two Android devices. In his day job, his primary responsibility is Android implementation for new devices.
In the past, Shree has worked in diverse areas ranging from system programming, mathematical simulation, distributed systems, high performance computer graphics and GPU computing.
