Citizen Mapping

Mapping for change

Learn how you can use open web mapping tools like openstreetmap to collect spatial data from your surroundings and create your own maps that can be used for citizen activism.

Session 1 : Mapping your neighborhood waste

As urban residents, we are constantly plagued by wide range of civic issues like garbage dumping, bad roads, depleting water tables and more. The first step in understanding the problem is to get the big picture and study prevailing patterns, for which maps play an important role.

In this hands on workshop, we will undertake a field survey of our neighborhood to collect data of garbage dumping spots and other information related to the cleanliness of the surroundings. We will explore using both digital tools and analog tools to collect this data and understand how it can be translated to a digital map using the OpenStreetMap project.

We will later explore map designing tools like Mapbox Studio to quickly visualize the data we have collected into an interactive web map or a high resolution printable map.
