DESCRIPTION:_Workshop @ VizChitra 2025_\n\n# The Sonic Signature: Plotting
  Your Name's Audio Landscape\n\n![](https://cdn.glitch.global/136bc3c2-67a
 e-41f3-893e-53470dcb6ae5/Output.jpg?v=1748805961714)\n\nEver wondered what
the unique sound of your name looks like? In this hands-on workshop\, we
’ll embark on an exciting journey to capture your “sonic signature”
and translate it into a striking visual landscape. We’ll begin by genera
ting the audio waveform of your name using text-to-speech. We’ll then de
lve into audio analysis\, extracting meaningful data from the audio output
. This data will form the foundation for our visualization.\n\nNext\, we
’ll explore data visualization\, learning how to sculpt this processed a
udio data into a compelling visual representation inspired by the iconic a
nd stark aesthetic of Joy Division’s album artwork. By the end of this e
xercise\, participants will have the opportunity to plot their visual repr
 esentation\, and take home as a physical artwork.\n\n## Key Takeaways\n- U
nderstand the fundamental principles of audio sonification and how sound c
an be represented as quantifiable data.\n- Learn how to use JavaScript and
the Web Audio API to access and process audio data.\n- Learn how to use H
TML Canvas and SVG javsascript APIs for data visualization.\n- Learn pract
ical techniques for visualizing data in a distinctive and aesthetically dr
iven style\, specifically drawing inspiration from the visual language of
Joy Division.\n- Gain hands-on experience in preparing data visualizations
(from Canvas and/or SVG) for physical output using a plotter and understa
nd the process of translating digital visualizations into tangible art.\n\
n## Audience for the Workshop\nThis workshop is designed for anyone with a
curiosity about the intersection of sound\, data\, artistic expression\,
and web technologies. It is particularly relevant for:\n\n- Data enthusias
ts and individuals curious about data visualization techniques and audio a
nalysis.\n- Artists and designers seeking to explore new digital mediums a
nd data-driven art forms using web technologies\, including physical plott
ing.\n- Web developers and JavaScript enthusiasts interested in exploring
the capabilities of the Web Audio API and visualization libraries for crea
tive applications.\nIndividuals interested in the relationship between sou
nd\, visual culture\, and iconic design aesthetics like that of Joy Divisi
on.\n- Anyone looking for a unique and hands-on introduction to data visua
lization\, web-based audio processing\, and the exciting possibilities of
physical plotting.\n\nNo prior experience in Javascript development is str
ictly necessary\, though a basic understanding will be beneficial. I will
guide you through each step\, from processing audio data to applying styli
stic transformations that evoke the powerful simplicity of Joy Division’
s visuals\, and exporting your creation for plotting.\n\nThis workshop off
ers a creative and accessible entry point into data visualization and audi
o processing\, demonstrating how abstract data derived from sound can be t
ransformed into personal and visually resonant forms. You’ll gain practi
cal skills in applying artistic principles to data representation\, culmin
ating in the creation of a personalized artwork that beautifully bridges t
he realms of sound and sight\, and is ready for physical manifestation via
a plotter.\n\n## Workshop Details:\n### Workshop Duration and Time Breakd
own\nThis workshop will be approximately 3 hours in total.\n\n- **Audio Pr
ocessing and Data Extraction**: ~1 hour (Hands-on)\n- **Data Visualization
and Stylistic Transformation**: ~1 hour (Hands-on)\n- **Physical Plotting
**: ~1 hour (Plotting will happen one at a time.\n\nParticipants can conti
nue refining their creations or engage in discussions during this period.\
 n\n### Technical Requirements\n- Systems/Laptop Specifications: Any laptop
capable of running the latest Chrome browser without any lag.\n- Software
to Pre-install: Preferably the latest Chrome browser. Although most moder
n browsers are up-to-date with the necessary APIs.\n- Any Other Necessary
Equipment: If participants wish to record their voice instead of using tex
t-to-speech\, a pair of headphones with an in-built microphone is recommen
ded for audio recording.\n\n### FAQ / Practical Considerations\n- _Will te
mplates/starter code be provided?_\n A step-by-step breakdown of the code
will be provided to help participants catch up if they encounter any issu
es implementing.\n- _What if text-to-speech encounters issues?_\n Parti
cipants can use their own voice and record audio via built-in microphone o
n their machines.\n- _What if plotting doesn’t go as planned?_\n If ta
kes longer than expected to do the plots\, local participants’ plots can
be completed later and delivered (e.g.\, via Dunzo). In the worst-case sc
enario where the plotter is non-functional\, artworks can be printed using
a regular printer.\n- _Whether participants will work individually or pai
rs/groups?_\n Participants based on their preference / background and pr
oficiency in JavaScript are free to pair programme with other fellow parti
cipants.\n- _Whether any pre-workshop materials or readings will be shared
?_\n A day prior to the workshop I will be sharing a one-pager to help p
articipants set up P5 js accounts to save workshop time. It will also prov
ide general tips for JavaScript programming.\n- _Post-workshop support or
resources (if any)?_\n I will share a GitHub repository containing the w
orkshop code with all participants for future reference.\n- _Any assessmen
t methods to ensure workshop outcomes are met by the participants?_\n As
the focus is on creative exploration\, all outcomes are welcomed!\n\n## Ab
out the Instructor \nSamarth is a creative coder and web developer based i
 n Chandigarh\, India\, where he works as a front-end developer at Postman.
Driven by a fascination for generative design\, Samarth has spent the las
t 10 years building interactive web experiences. Beyond his professional w
ork\, he delves into procedural artwork\, often materializing his digital
visions through plotting and 3D printing. He explores the intersection of
code and aesthetics\, using Javascript and other tools to create unique vi
sual outputs.\n\n_This session is part of the Workshop Day on 28th June\,
