  [Aman’s blog about using Orange](https://aman.bh/blog/2025/visual-progr
 amming-with-orange)\n\n### Overview\nHow can Bollywood / Hollywood stars\,
Literary Fiction heroes\, and Sports champs help us understand\, remember
\, and create all this Data\, Data Viz\, and Stats stuff?\n\nTaking inspir
 ation from stories\, film videos\, short stories\, and sports\, and a usin
g point-and-click Photoshop-like software tool\, we will make data and dat
a visualizations and stats out of them.\n\nWe will link stars to data at f
irst and generate several charts that represent the stories we might alrea
dy know. Then\, we will conjure up data (from yet another movie) and devel
op an intuition statistical inference procedures as well. All with #Orange
 DataMining and #NoCode.\n\n### Audience\nBeginners\, Practitioners\, Moms\
 , Dads\, Data-Storytellers and Teachers\n\n### Detailed Abstract & Takeawa
ys\nWe will draw from stories real life sports persons\, and of course\, t
he movies\, to motivate ourselves. In effect\, we will be going from Story
-to-Data. This workshop will discuss and present several ideas:\n\n- Data
and Charts from Stars and their Stories\n- Throwing away data is not so ra
sh as it might seem\n- How converting data into geometry is part-culture\,
part-tech\n- Statistical inference is about creating structured surprise.
\n\nWe will use Orange Data Mining\, a tool created at the University of L
jubljana\, Slovenia. This is a near-enough PhotoShop clone for Data Scienc
e\, that sets up complex data science tasks using a simple point-and-click
interface\, using an array\nof connected computational widgets onto a can
 vas.\n\nBasic data import\, visualizations\, their interpretations\, and s
ome statistical procedures will be intuitively explored. We will accomplis
h this by fairly rapidly constructing several such Workflows\, as they\nar
e called in Orange\, allowing us to get a decent amount of practice with t
he tool as well.\n\nPrepare for a LOT of name-dropping\, just because name
s are memorable !\n\n### Workshop Outline & Plan\n**1: Installation of Ora
nge (15 mins)**\n– Download and installation \n– Sample Workflows in O
range \n– Widgets and what they mean \n– Exploring Data in Orange \n
 – How to make a workflow in Orange \n– Exporting Orange outputs to Wor
d / Powerpoint\n– Workflow #1\n\n**2: Throwing it All Away with Brad Pit
t: Data Summaries (15 mins)**\n– Introductory video from MoneyBall \n–
How throwing away data may be a good thing \n– What does throwing it al
l away mean \n– Throwing away Data using Orange\n – Favourite Stats Me
asures in Orange \n– Workflow #2\n\n**3. The Cultural Geometry of Data V
iz**\n\n**3a: Counting Chickens Letters with Sherlock Holmes (15 mins)**\n
 – A short story from Conan Doyle \n– An inspirational chart\n– How d
id Holmes use it (almost) to solve a crime\n– Replicate that chart in Or
ange \n– Why counting chickens is a good idea \n– Workflow #3\n\n**3b:
Nursery Rhymes with Ben Affleck (15 mins)**\n– Reciting Solomon Grundy
\n– An inspirational chart \n– Replicate that chart in Orange \n– Wh
at is Ben Affleck’s birth day? \n– Why hospitals are bad places on wee
kends\n– Workflow #4\n\n**3c: Being a Mermaid with Katie Ledecky (15 min
s)**\n– Ek Ledecky Bhigi-Bhaagi si \n– An astonishing chart\n– Repli
cate that chart in Orange \n– What does the geometry of the chart tell u
s \n– Should we tilt our heads to see under water? \n– Workflow #5\n\n
**3d: Jack and Rose lived happily ever after (15 mins)**\n– A sombre cha
rt \n– Replicate that chart in Orange \n– Was Rose really evil? \n–
Were the Odds tilted against Jack? \n– Why drinking during a shipwreck i
 s a good thing \n– Introducing the X 2 test \n– Workflow #6\n\n**3e: T
he Art of Surprise with Gabbar Singh (15 mins)**\n– Making data in Ramga
dh \n– Can we feign ignorance for good? \n– Gabbar Singh as Permutator
\n– Introducing Permutation Tests \n– Quantizing surprise with p-valu
 es \n– Workflow #7\n\n**4. Q&A\, Discussion (15 mins)**\n\n**5. Brief De
mo of R-in-your-browser (if you are up for it!)**\n\n### About the Instruc
tor\nArvind Venkatadri is External Faculty\, Srishti Manipal Institute of
