DESCRIPTION:Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) have exploded upon the startup s
cene\, especially in the last 12 months. Numerous projects (often not even
prototypes) have succeeded in raising tens of millions of dollars in a ma
tter of days - sometimes even seconds! This talk will dive into how the co
mbination of open source\, crowdfunding\, blockchain and smart contracts h
as enabled this trend\, and what this implies for developers\, entrepreneu
rs and the average individual investor. I will also cover specifics relate
d to tokens\, regulation\, steps in an ICO and red flags to watch out for.
You will learn why 90%+ of ICOs will probably fail\, but why the concept
of ICOs is here to stay.\n\nSeveral product or engineering folks might fin
d the topic relevant\, perhaps as they think about starting ventures or si
mply supporting open source projects with their time or money in the futur
e.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nNitin Sharma is an investor in the blockchain spa

DESCRIPTION:1. The requirement to build a p2p payments app on top of UPI.
In 3 weeks.\n - Started as building the “Reference app for UPI”\, w
hich transformed to BHIM.\n - The technical requirement - Build highly
scalable\, secure\, stable and universally available p2p payments platform
built on top of UPI in record time that will horizontally scale to 200M c
ustomers.\n\n2. Only possible if we\n - Hyper parallelize work and ide
ntify composable parts\n - Write less code. Reuse.\n - Rapidly ite
rate with acceptance testing cycles.\n\n3. The Technology we chose: Javasc
ript for unification & FP for composition\,\nrobustness. Learnings Good an
 d Bad:\n - Good\n - Integrated backend for BHIM and *99#\n
     - Usage of FP - monads\, pure functions\, state and error handling\n
           - Using Monads to sequence flows in JS really improved robustnes
 s \n - Use of JS - unified code across platforms\, achieved small s
ize app <2MB\n - Innovation in handling accessibility and multiling
ual content\n - Innovation in managing parallel work & working in s
hifts.\n - Bad\n - The Redux way complicated the frontend for tr

DESCRIPTION:- Day -1 : We have this figured out - We want to build this -
Lets quit\, register a Pvt Ltd - Fintech ecosystem seems so startup friend
ly - We should have an alpha product out in a few months.\n- Day 0 : Yaay!
  - Company registered - Lets build our product around a traditional bank a
ccount - they have APIs - We can consume them securely - Just need to tie
up with the Financial Institution and build.\n- Day 1: Hey there - (In Per
son and on Email) - We are XYZ\, we have been following the amazing thin
gs your Financial Institution is doing. Here is a presentation on what we
want to build - Lets make this happen.\n- Day 15: Looping in Mr A - Day 30
: Looping in Mr J…...\n- Day 30: Looks like it is going to take a while
for Financial Institutions to get back to us - Let's see if we can prepare
to add Mutual Fund support to our product.\n - How to go about getting
the permission to sell mutual funds?\n - Looks like we need to wri
te an exam\n - Lets read the prescribed book - (╯°□°)╯︵
┻━┻\n - We need APIs - Who are the different providers for the AP
Is?\n - Payment mechanisms used for Mutual Funds - Quick run through of
currently live ones and their ease of use.\n- Day ..: Lets approach more
Financial Institutions for building around traditional bank accounts. \n-
Day ..: Lets see if there is a way to build a bank\n - Co-operative ban
 ks seem doable\n - Regulation behind Co-operative banks\n - Why it m
akes sense to build for Co-operative banks\n - Co-operative banking sof
tware and IDRBT\n - What next?\n- Day …: Capital requirements for reg
ulatory approvals for different products in the Financial ecosystem. (Spo
iler Alert: Not a small number) and IMHO - the need for a different proces
s of regulation.\n- Day ..: Lets also try to be SEBI Registered Investment
Advisers in the meanwhile\n - Why?\n - Looks like this one has two
 exams\n - (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻\n- Day ..: Maybe Financial Insti
tutions are not yet ready for building around traditional bank accounts (O
pinion on why this might be). Lets see if we can build around a good old w
allet.\n - Try to reach out to various Wallet players\n - Few are in
terested in allowing us to build with them:\n - How do this work? \
n - Explained with examples showing existing wallet partnerships in
  the market\n - October 12\, 2017 - New PPI guidelines from RBI\n
   - PPIs with KYC are just as good as current accounts with 1L balances -
This is amazing.\n - PPIs require the wallet provider to limit the
maximum balance of a user across its various partnerships.\n - ….\n-
 Losing 10%: Revealed during the Talk\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nPraneeth is a c

involved in trying to build an embedded systems startup\, launching a stud

DESCRIPTION:# Topics: \n- Fairness\, Accountability and Transparency for M
L in transaction data\n- Preventing bias in data driven decision making\n\
n# Key takeaways:\n- Algorithms do not behave like a biased human. Their b
iases are entirely their own\, and intuitions derived from racist humans d
o not translate. \n- Fairness and bias prevention is a problem of analytic
al philosophy as much as one of mathematics. You need to address both. \n-
Because the morals of bias are different in India than in Silicon Valley\
, we need an Indian approach to these topics. We can’t simply copy a tec
hnique from a Google or Microsoft paper and apply it directly. \n\n# Direc
tion of talk:\nAlgo Fairness is NOT about fixing incorrect predictions. It
’s about correct predictions/decision processes that are considered in s
ome sense “unfair”. \n\nMost research in algo fairness is based on Ame
 rican/British moral intuitions around racism/sexism. Specifically: \n\n -
The (western) virtue ethics of not noticing. “I’m a good person becaus
e I never noticed that Tamils are pretty smart.” \n - Racist preferences
\, or it’s bad to like Tamils more than one likes Punjabis.\n - Individu
al equality\, ignore group membership\, evaluate people on their own merit
 s. \n - Group rights. \n\nMost of this does not apply to the Indian contex
 t. Algo fairness will be different here. \n\nExplain what algorithms do an
d don’t do. Dispel a few myths:\n\n - If you train your algorithm on yo
ur 100% group X set of employees\, it does NOT mean your algorithm will be
biased against non-X people.\n - Algorithms will NOT automatically use pr
otected class information even if it’s available.\n - If your input data
is biased\, algorithms will often fix the bias\, and they may use protect
ed class information to do this.\n - Explain certain proposed concrete imp
lementations of algorithmic fairness. Illustrate how these implementations
are inconsistent with each other - i.e.\, it’s mathematically impossibl
 e to satisfy everyone. \n\nExplain that non-algorithmic decisionmaking (e.
 g. humans in the loop) does not resolve any of these problems. \n\nIllustr
ate with examples how the person implementing algorithm cannot puntor hand
wave on hard ethical questions. Algorithm says “issue loan” or “rej
ect loan”\, must make a choice. \n\nBring up need for involvement of peo
ple who understand math\, otherwise journalists/activists will pick up the
  slack.\n\n### Speaker bio\n\nChris Stucchio is a former physicist\, high
frequency trader and software developer. He's currently the head of data s
cience at Simpl. He's been working in decision theory and bayesian optimiz
ation for the past 5 years\, and has been teaching statistics to novices f
 or much longer.\n
